From the Associated Press: Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party won Canada’s federal election on Monday, capping a stunning turnaround in fortunes fueled by U.S. President Donald Trump’s annexation threats and trade war.

After polls closed, the Liberals were projected to win more of Parliament’s 343 seats than the Conservatives, though it wasn’t immediately clear if they would win an outright majority — at least 172 — or would need to rely on one of the smaller parties to form a government and pass legislation.

The Liberals looked headed for a crushing defeat until the American president started attacking Canada’s economy and threatening its sovereignty, suggesting it should become the 51st state. Trump’s actions infuriated Canadians and stoked a surge in nationalism that helped the Liberals flip the election narrative and win a fourth-straight term in power.

“We were dead and buried in December. Now we are going to form a government,” David Lametti, a former Liberal Justice Minister, told broadcaster CTV.

Joe Biden is celebrating. A post on his X account reads, “I congratulate Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Liberal Party on their success in Canada’s election. I’m confident Mark will be a strong leader for the fundamental values and interests Canadians and Americans share.”

Former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg gushed, “A big congratulations to @MarkJCarney on his election victory. Mark’s experience in government and business, his deep understanding of markets, and his forward-looking agenda — including his commitment to tackling challenges through international cooperation — will serve Canada well. Our two countries share common values, common interests, and a deep investment in each other’s success. I wish him all the best as he leads Canada into the future.”

X user “datahazard” wrote, “About 33% of Canada’s residential population is foreign-born now. That’s up from 24% when Trudeau first took office. Now, we get to see what next-gen liberal immigration policy looks like in real time. Best of luck, Canadians. This is what you voted for.”

Conservative political commentator David J. Freeman, who posts as “Gunther Eagleman” on X, mocked, “Have fun Canada. Now we will be able to see the shtshow that would’ve happened under Kamala.”
