During the Covid pandemic, the state of California experienced a mass exodus, as over 400,000 residents packed up and left.
However, the Democrat-led state is now touting a population boom. A report by the Wall Street Journal on Sunday reveals the true source of California’s new population surge: immigration.
“Immigration Is the Only Thing Propping Up California’s Population,” the Wall Street Journal titled their report.
Sharing the story of an immigrant who recently arrived in California from India on a O-1A work visa, the WSJ revealed, “California is growing again because of immigrants… The state’s population rose 0.6% in 2024, reaching 39.43 million by adding almost a quarter-million people, according to Census Bureau estimates.”
Some key facts outlines in the Wall Street Journal report:
- Since 2010, California has added 2.7 million immigrants, according to the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. Fully half have come from Asia, and slightly more than a third from Latin America.
- In 2024, nearly 79,000 foreign workers came to California on the H-1B visa program.
- California has more births than deaths—a surplus of 110,000 in the most recent year.
- More than a quarter of its population is foreign-born
- About 17% of the state’s immigrants were undocumented in 2022
On May 1, Gov. Gavin Newsom bragged, “California grew by 108,000 people last year — making the Golden State now 39.5 million strong. People from across the nation and around the globe are arriving to chase the California Dream, where rights are protected and people are respected.”

X user ‘Doge from Wall Street’ reacted to the report, writing, “In 2024, ~360,000 immigrants moved to California while 240,000 Americans moved out. In other words, they’re importing people from other countries to replace the Americans leaving California. We all know why…”
