From Fox News: Former Attorney General Derek Schmidt, who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump in Kansas’ 2nd Congressional District, won the GOP primary race on Tuesday.

Schmidt had more than 53% of the vote as of Wednesday morning.

The seat is currently represented by 36-year-old Rep. Jake LaTurner, who announced he would not be seeking re-election.

The primary saw a large pool of candidates, including former Health and Human Services official Jeff Kahrs, Michael Ogle, Shawn Tiffany and Chad Young.

Schmidt will now run in the November election against former Rep. Nancy Boyda, who won the Democrat primary Tuesday night.

Boyda held the seat for one term, from 2006 to 2008. Aside from that, the seat has been held by Republicans for nearly 30 years.

Trump had confirmed his endorsement for Schmidt in a Truth Social post last month:

After winning the GOP primary Tuesday night, Schmidt released the following statement:

Thank you for the honor of your Republican nomination to represent our home — the 2nd Congressional District of Kansas.

Our precious system of self-government requires citizen participation. So thank you to every citizen who voted in this election. And congratulations to my primary opponents for putting themselves forward as candidates for this open seat. I welcome and am grateful for their support as we come together as a united Republican Party.

As I said when announcing my candidacy, my steady guidepost will always be what is best for the people of the 2nd District and for America. America needs more effective, conservative voices in public service.

I will continue to prioritize securing our border, stopping inflation, and rolling back big government’s overregulation and over-taxation of our daily lives.
You can count on me to stand tall for our conservative values, advocate for our communities, protect our freedoms, uphold law and order, support our military and veterans, defend our farmers and ranchers and small businesses, and promote our great Kansas institutions of learning throughout the 2nd District.
We don’t need, nor can we afford, bigger government—we need better government.

Our country and so many Kansas families were better off under the previous federal Administration, and their successful policies. So I look forward to making our case, defeating extremist Kamala Harris and her allies, and working with President Trump – yes, to truly Make America Great Again for generations to come.
