From Axios: President Trump claimed Tuesday Canadian officials were considering his proposal for Canada to contribute $61 billion toward his proposed “Golden Dome” missile defense shield versus paying nothing if it became the 51st U.S. state.

The big picture: Trump, who has repeatedly threatened Canadian sovereignty, made the comments soon after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney outlined plans for closer defense ties with the European Union.

King Charles III had delivered several subtle jabs to the U.S. and the Trump administration during his speech to the Canadian Parliament earlier Tuesday, saying a “confident Canada” can “give themselves far more than any foreign power can ever take away.”

In a Truth Social post Tuesday evening, President Trump wrote: “I told Canada, which very much wants to be part of our fabulous Golden Dome System, that it will cost $61 Billion Dollars if they remain a separate, but unequal, Nation, but will cost ZERO DOLLARS if they become our cherished 51st State. They are considering the offer!”

However, it doesn’t appear Canada is considering the proposal at all.

King Charles declared while speaking to the Canadian Parliament Tuesday, “the True North is strong and free.”

“This moment of change is also a moment of opportunity — to think big and act bigger. An opportunity for Canada to embark on the largest transformation of its economy in generations,” Prime Minister Carney announced.

In another post on X Tuesday night, Carney vowed, “We will create one united Canadian economy out of thirteen — removing the barriers that have held back our economy to unleash a new era of growth.”
