From the New York Post: Facial recognition technology will soon be enabled at every security checkpoint inside Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport — a global first, CNN reported.
The Smart Travel project, currently being implemented inside the futuristic flight hub serving the capital of the wealthy United Arab Emirates, will replace the traditional screening process — and the whipping out of travel documents, like a passport or ID card.
The capability will reportedly also be implemented at duty-free shops, lounges and boarding gates as well.
The goal is to have the biometric concept — which has courted controversy in the United States — fully running in 2025 at nine locations.
“Imagine boarding a flight without showing your passport, ID or ticket even once at the airport,” CNN wrote in a report on Wednesday.
The Smart Travel Project “aims to install biometric sensors in every identification checkpoint of the airport, from check-in counters to immigration booths, duty-free tills, airline lounges and boarding gates,” the report explains.
CNN further writes: Biometrics are the biological measurements that identify us as individuals. The sensors mean that at any point where a document is required for access, the passenger’s identity and travel status can be verified by facial or iris recognition.
This plan has been in the works for several years. Below is a 2018 post demonstrating the system. The post explains, “Dubai Airports’ New Smart Tunnel will enable passengers to finish passport control procedures in 15 seconds by simply walking through this biometric recognition system. Take a look! See the floor which turns green if the passenger is cleared”
