REPORT: Texas Republican politician stabbed, husband killed after allegedly being attacked by their grandson at home

From the New York PostA “beloved” Texas politician was stabbed and her husband murdered at their home early Monday — with their grandson charged with the bloodbath.

Longtime Denton County Commissioner Bobbie J. Mitchell and her husband, Fred Mitchell, were found wounded just before 4 a.m. inside their home in Lewisville, where she served as the city’s first black mayor, according to the Denton County Sheriff’s Office.

The Republican politician, 76, was rushed to the hospital in stable condition while her husband, 75, was pronounced dead about an hour after the attack, police said.

Their 23-year-old grandson, Mitchell Blake Reinacher, was found at the scene and has been charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.


Police said the grandson is believed to have lived in the same home with his grandparents.

12News anchor Kevin Steele posted a photo and wrote, “CRIME SHOCK | Longtime Lewisville (TX) political leader stabbed, husband stabbed to death. Bobbie Mitchell and her husband Fred were found by police early this morning. She was a staunch conservative and Denton County commissioner. Her grandson has been taken into custody.”

The Denton County Sheriff’s Department posted the following press release on Facebook Monday morning:

Date: April 21, 2025

This morning, at approximately 3:53 a.m., Lewisville Police Department officers responded to a report of an assault in progress in the 1000 block of Springwood Drive.

Upon arrival, officers located two adult victims—a male and a female—both suffering from apparent stab wounds. The suspect, a family member of the victims, was still on scene and was immediately taken into custody without incident.
Lewisville Fire Department personnel rendered aid and transported both victims to area hospitals.

The female victim has been identified as Bobbie J. Mitchell, Denton County Commissioner for Precinct 3. Commissioner Mitchell currently serves the Lewisville area and is a prominent public servant. She is a former Lewisville City Council member and was the city’s first Black mayor, elected in 1993. She held the office until her resignation in January 2000 to run for her current county position.

Commissioner Mitchell is listed in stable condition and is being treated for stab wounds. Commissioner Mitchell’s husband, Fred Mitchell, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased shortly after 5:00 a.m.

The suspect, Michell Blake Reinacher, the grandson of the victims, has been booked into the Lewisville jail and is presently charged with Murder and Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. The crime scene remains active as LPD crime scene investigators and detectives continue processing evidence and working to determine the circumstances that led to the attack.

Additional details will be released as the investigation progresses.

Andy Eads, a county judge in Denton County, wrote, “My dear friend, colleague and mentor Precinct 3 Commissioner Bobbie Mitchell has suffered an unfathomable tragedy this morning. I have known her and her beloved husband, Fred, since childhood, growing up in Lewisville. I have always appreciated Fred sharing Bobbie with the public all these 34 years. Fred will be greatly missed. Please join me in keeping Bobbie and her family in our thoughts and prayers. I want to thank everyone from across our County and the State of Texas for their abundance of calls and texts and best wishes for her complete recovery.”

Dan Jaworski- Former Mayor, City of Highland Village, wrote, “Gretchen and I are absolutely stunned and heartbroken over this morning’s tragic news about Denton County Commissioner Bobbie Mitchell and her husband.

“Bobbie is one of the most genuine and Godly people I know so it is just gut wrenching to hear of the loss of her dear Fred. On so many occasions, she would offer the prayer all of us needed so it is in this moment of deep sadness and loss that we will all wrap her in prayers for healing and comfort.”
