From Breitbart: A massive Internet blackout struck Afghanistan on September 29, evidently imposed by the Taliban regime to “prevent immoral activities,” as a spokesman for the Islamist junta put it.
Radio Free Europe (RFE) noted that Taliban officials were spotted “severing fiber-optic cables in multiple provinces” a few weeks ago, causing local Internet outages.
On Friday, a regime spokesman in the northern province of Balkh said the cables in his region were cut on the orders of Taliban Supreme Leader Haibatullah Akhundzada. Three days later, the Internet went dark in most of Afghanistan and mobile phone service was sharply degraded.
“Recent studies in Afghanistan found that internet applications have badly affected the ongoing, economic, cultural and religious foundations of society,” the Taliban spokesman said.
An internet watchdog group called NetBlocks highlighted the blackout in posts on social media.
Thursday morning, NetBlocks announced, “Metrics show internet connectivity in #Afghanistan still flatlining 48 hours after the country’s disconnection; telemetry confirms Taliban experimentation with various censorship mechanisms in preceding weeks, contradicting their claims of a “fiber replacement” program.”
In an update one hour later, NetBlocks announced, “Live network data show the partial restoration of internet connectivity in #Afghanistan amid outcry after a two-day national telecoms blackout; the incident comes as the Taliban leadership applies new “immorality” rules on telco operators.”

Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) fired off a letter to U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Walz.
Burchett wrote:
The Taliban’s deliberate and sweeping nationwide internet blackout, imposed on September 29, 2025, is a flagrant assault on the Afghan people’s fundamental rights. By severing digital access, the Taliban is silencing dissent, isolating Afghanistan, and denying women and girls vital pathways to education and advocacy. This act of oppression not only devastates Afghan society but also fuels further regional instability, threatening U.S. national security interests. The Taliban maintains ties with Al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups, valuing control and extremism above the Afghan people’s welfare. This blackout is clear evidence of their commitment to tyranny over progress.
Your leadership at the United Nations is essential to confront this crisis. I urge you to propose a UN resolution condemning the Taliban’s actions, demanding the immediate restoration of internet access, and reimposing travel restrictions against their leadership to hold them accountable for suppressing the fundamental freedoms of the Afghan people. Additionally, the United States must bolster support for the anti-Taliban opposition through global advocacy, empowering Former Acting President Amrullah Saleh of Afghanistan and those fighting for a free and inclusive Afghanistan.
Please coordinate with the Department of State to ensure a cohesive U.S. strategy. I respectfully request an update on your efforts to advance these priorities at the UN. I am committed to working with you to uphold our shared values of freedom and security.
