From the New York Post: The illegal immigrant accused of torching a woman to death on a Brooklyn subway train was so blacked-out drunk that he was shocked when cops showed him video of the appalling attack, newly released court records reveal.
“Oh damn, that’s me!” Guatemalan native Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, 33, allegedly told NYPD detectives when he was shown footage of the Dec. 22 attack at a Brooklyn F train station.
“No, the truth is I don’t remember,” he said. “Oh my goodness!”
Zapeta-Calil looked disgusted at the images, wiping his eyes and putting his head down on a table, according to a transcript of the interview unsealed in Brooklyn Supreme Court on Tuesday.
A 57-year-old New Jersey woman, later identified as Debrina Kawam, who used a walker, was sleeping on the train on December 22, when Zapeta-Calil lit her on fire, then calmly watched her burn to death.
Zapeta-Calil admitted that he is frequently drunk, and says he doesn’t remember what happens when he’s drunk.
“When I wake up, I’m already in the house, already sleeping. I wake up when I’m already home, or there are times when I wake up and I’m already at the train station,” he said, according to the transcript. “I was drunk. I drink in the afternoons.”
On the day ahead of the attack, Zapeta-Calil admitted that after he finished working with “a Mexican” on a roofing job, he headed for a Queens bar, where he drank beer and tequila, then picked up more beer and kept drinking during the night. In the morning, he got on the train, and then set the woman on fire.
He claimed that he doesn’t remember when he got on the train – he just woke up and was there.
The horrific crime shocked the nation, and raised even greater concerns about the out-of-control crime happening on and around the New York subway system.
According to immigration officials, Zapeta-Calil illegally crossed the border into the US in June 2018, and the Trump administration DEPORTED him back to Guatemala just days later. Then, at an unknown date, he snuck back into the country as a “gotaway,” and took up refuge in New York City – a sanctuary city – and has been living in New York City’s migrant shelter system since at least March 2023.
Zapeta-Calil has been charged with murder and arson, and is being held at Rikers Island without bail.
