From Fox News: As President-elect Donald Trump privately storyboards his cabinet choices, one top state official who is rumored to be on the shortlist for secretary of education is releasing his game plan for shifting the department’s duties to states and parents, Fox News Digital has learned.
In a memo to Oklahoma parents and school administrators, Oklahoma Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters will state that the federal agency has “hijacked our education system using taxpayer dollars to impose harmful policies and control what’s taught in our schools.”
Some issues Walters said he is bringing to the fore both in the memo and what he is calling a Trump Education Advisory Team to be announced Monday.
The Department of Education is a relatively new stand-alone cabinet agency created under former President Jimmy Carter, which his successor, Ronald Reagan, called to shutter during his 1982 State of the Union.
Trump has vowed that he will close the U.S. Department of Education and allow individual states to control their own education system.
Trump announces ten point plan to revitalize American schools, with a final point that he will end the Department of Education and give power back to states:
1. Parental choice in education.
2. Hire and reward greatness, fire poor performers.

Walters said his team would work with the Trump administration to fill any gaps left by federal programs and develop legislative recommendations.
Walters wants to end social indoctrination in the classrooms, support parents’ rights, end foreign influence in America’s schools, and bring back patriotism.
“I look forward to working hand in hand with the Trump Administration to help dismantle the decades of damage the federal government has inflicted on public education. Read the full memo I sent to parents and schools today,” Walters announced on Thursday.

The memo from Walters reads as follows:
The federal government has hijacked our education system, using taxpayer dollars to impose harmful policies and control what is taught in our schools. This memo addresses five major areas where eliminating the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) and moving to block grants would restore authority to states, allowing communities – not Washington bureaucrats – to decide what is best for their children.
- Championing Parents’ Rights: The Biden administration labeled parents as threats and tried to silence their concerns. States, when restored control, will ensure parents’ voices are not just heard but respected.
- Ending Social Indoctrination in Classrooms: Federal funds have been used to force radical agendas, like promoting boys in girls’ sports and pushing divisive gender and racial ideologies. With block grants, states can reject these mandates and focus on real education over propaganda.
- Protecting Patriotism in Curriculum: Schools are pressured to teach books that undermine American values and ignore the truth about American history. By removing federal overreach, states can make sure students learn a patriotic curriculum that respects our country and honors our shared heritage.
- Stopping Illegal Immigration’s Impact on Schools: Open border policies flood schools with unregulated demands, stretching resources meant for American kids. States, free from federal overreach, could manage these impacts in ways that protect classrooms and prioritize their communities.
- Blocking Foreign Influence in Our Schools: Federal policies tie funding to outside agendas, allowing China and other adversaries to infiltrate our education system. Without federal strings, states could reject foreign interference and ensure schools promote only American values.
As we prepare for important and impactful changes to public education policy in the coming months, the Oklahoma State Department of Education will be directing agency resources to ensure the above priorities are championed and that Oklahoma schools are equipped to smoothly adapt while maintaining the highest standards of education for our students.

Walters posted the following video message on Friday, saying Americans sent a clear message that they want President Trump’s policies enacted, and this is no time for “bipartisan” politics.

“For more than 2 years, Oklahomans have demanded sweeping reforms and an American First Agenda. @realdonaldtrump’s vision will be a reality in Oklahoma. We are taking our schools back,” announced Ryan.

In June, Walters announced, “Oklahoma kids will learn that the Bible and the Ten Commandments are foundational for western civilization. The left is upset, but one cannot rewrite history.”

Last month Walters sent Kamala Harris a fiery letter over allowing millions of illegal aliens to pour across the border into the United States, and demanded that Oklahoma taxpayers be reimbursed for the $475 million they have paid since 2021 to educate illegal aliens.
