From Fox News: A drunk driver who fatally mowed down a 16-year-old girl in Queens on Saturday is a previously deported Honduran illegal immigrant who had several prior DUI arrests, a senior Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) source told FOX.

Edwin Cruz Gomez, 38, was arrested by the New York City Police Department (NYPD) on Saturday and was charged with murder, three counts of attempted murder and two counts of assault and other crimes after allegedly running down Jhoanny Gomez-Alvarez and her mother after they rejected his sexual advances, according to the source.

An immigration detainer was lodged on Monday.

ABC7 New York reported that 16-year-old Jhoanny Alvarez was with her mother, stepfather and her boyfriend when they were encountered by Gomez, who reportedly started harassing Alvarez and her mother outside a bar, offering them both money for sexual acts.

A verbal dispute escalated into a fight between the boyfriend and Gomez, but bystanders intervened and separated them.

When the teen, her mother, stepfather and the boyfriend all walked away from the restaurant and crossed the street, Gomez then got into his 2009 Chevrolet Suburban, drove onto the sidewalk and plowed into the group, pinning the 16-year-old girl against a light pole.

Gomez then put his vehicle into reverse to flee the scene, crashed into an unoccupied van, and then tried to flee on foot. He later claimed to NYPD officers that HE was assaulted.

Video of the horrific incident has been posted on social media.

Fox News reported that Gomez was first deported from the US in 2005. At some point, he returned again to the U.S., and was arrested for driving drunk in April 2013 and detained by ICE Long Island. At that time, his deportation order was reinstated, “but he was released three months later under the Alternatives to Detention program and disappeared.”

Gomez was arrested THREE more times in recent months:

  • Arrested in October 2024 for “possession of a forged instrument,” but the Biden administration then let him go.
  • On November 13, 2024, he was convicted in Nassau County of driving without a license and sentenced to five days behind bars. He was then released.
  • On Jan. 26, 2025, he was arrested for driving drunk, but was released before a detainer could be lodged.
