From the Washington Examiner: Democratic strategist George Hornedo launched a campaign for Indiana’s 7th Congressional District, teeing up a primary against longtime Rep. Andre Carson (D-IN).
“For nearly 20 years, we’ve had the same leadership in Washington. That place, those people supposedly representing us, aren’t working for Indianapolis,” Hornedo said in a video announcement.
“The status quo is not working. Indy deserves leaders that fight for results, not just reelection. We need better players on the field,” he added.
Carson, a nine-term congressman, has easily won all his elections since first being elected in 2008. He won his 2024 race by 40 points over his Republican challenger. The district encompasses downtown Indianapolis and many northern suburbs.
“I respect congressman Carson, but after nearly two decades in office, too many folks are still struggling. Why would we double down on the same people that got us into this mess?” Hornedo said.
Carson, 50, was the second Muslim to be elected to U.S. Congress, after now-former Rep. Keith Ellison of Minnesota.
Hornedo, 34, another progressive Democrat, previously served on former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s 2020 presidential campaign. He currently leads a political strategy firm in Indiana.
Hornedo released his campaign announcement video on social media Wednesday morning:
I’m George Hornedo and I’m running for Congress because the old way isn’t working.
17 years of the same leadership—and too many families in Indy are still falling behind. It’s time for new energy. New urgency. New results.
Let’s build a better Indianapolis. pic.twitter.com/RAgC3LYXJs

Carson responded to his Democrat challenger, saying in a statement, “I am a proud lifelong progressive. Democrats must focus on the most important goal: defeating Donald Trump. I’m fighting back with legislation, litigation, and activism, and I invite all voices to join me to defeat far-right extremism.”
Hornedo fired back, “What’s a progressive with little progress? A Do-Nothing Democrat. This race isn’t about left vs. center. It’s about inertia vs. urgency, status quo vs. change—and who’s willing to actually build what comes next.”

An anti-Israel group slammed Hornedo for launching his challenge against Carson.
Shame on George Hornedo for attacking Rep. Carson. He is one of the few members of Congress standing against Israel’s genocide of Palestinians and calling out AIPAC’s anti-Democratic influence in our elections.

I’m proud to be, as @thehill notes, “one of a handful of younger, progressive challengers vying to oust longtime Democratic incumbents amid mounting frustration with the old guard and growing calls for new leadership in the party.”https://t.co/4jJLyGhd0h
