REPORT: New Jersey governor signs restrictions on immigration enforcement participation

From The Hill: New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill (D) signed several laws into effect Wednesday that limit the scope of federal immigration enforcement operations in the state.

The three bills include a mask ban for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers operating in the state, reducing cooperation between New Jersey and federal officials on immigration enforcement operations and preventing state officials from sharing the immigration statuses of New Jersey residents with federal officials.

“Donald Trump’s untrained, unaccountable, masked ICE agents are putting people in danger,” Sherrill wrote on the social platform X on Wednesday afternoon.

“That’s why I just signed a package of legislation to keep our communities safe – strengthening trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve, banning ICE agents from wearing masks, and protecting residents’ privacy from federal overreach,” the governor continued. “In New Jersey, we still follow the Constitution and uphold the rule of law.”

New Jersey state senator Holly Schepisi blasted the bill that Democrats just shoved through in her state. She wrote:

“Today in Trenton we had a host of bills that were deemed so extreme that even liberal Governor Murphy vetoed them. Rather than rethink these bills, the democratic members of this legislature decided to reintroduce them under the new Governor.

“These bills include the “Immigrant Trust Directive” and a bill that prohibits government entities from collecting or sharing ANY personal information that may be used in federal immigration law enforcement. These bills afford enhanced protections for even the worst of criminals who are in our country illegally.

“We offered a common sense amendment that those convicted of murder, child rape, human trafficking and other grave offenses who are here illegally are provided to ICE upon their release from prison. Our Democrat colleagues voted this amendment down. The red votes supported the amendment to protect NJ residents, the green votes supported the worst criminals who are illegally in NJ.”

Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ) responded, “New Jersey state Democrats just voted against turning over violent illegal criminals to ICE. Murderers. Traffickers. Rapists. This is who they are choosing to protect.”

On the same day the Democrat governor signed the bill preventing New Jersey law enforcement from cooperating with ICE, Rep. Drew announced that an illegal alien in the state  who killed someone in a hit-and-run is on the loose.

“In New Jersey, an illegal alien killed someone in a hit-and-run and is now on the loose. ICE is trying to track him, but NJ’s “Immigrant Trust Directive” makes it harder by blocking cooperation with federal immigration authorities. A broken system,” he wrote.
