From The Hill: Several federal agencies have advised employees not to respond to Elon Musk’s email demanding that federal workers list five accomplishments last week, or risk losing their jobs.

The email instructs federal workers to respond to the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) by 11:59 p.m. Monday EST. But a growing list of agencies, including the Pentagon, FBI, State Department and Intelligence Community, on Sunday had told their employees to hold off.

Saturday afternoon, Musk had posted a statement on X, announcing, “Consistent with President @realDonaldTrump’s instructions, all federal employees will shortly receive an email requesting to understand what they got done last week. Failure to respond will be taken as a resignation.”

Hours later, he wrote, “A large number of good responses have been received already. These are the people who should be considered for promotion.”

The Trump team soon announced, “Just got this email. Where do we begin?” They then attached a long list of achievements, including plummeting border crossings, Trump’s order stopping taxpayer benefits from going to illegal aliens, and much more.

But some agency leaders, including Def. Sec. Pete Hegseth, State Dept. Sec. Marco Rubio, FBI Director Kash Patel and Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard are notifying their employees that it isn’t necessary to respond to Musk’s email, indicating they prefer to deal with the issue internally.

Sunday morning, Musk posted a poll that asked, “Should all federal employees be required to send a short email with some basic bullet points about what they accomplished last week?”

70% who took the poll responded “Yes”.

Author Jeffrey Tucker commented, “The email to all federal workers last night – requesting an emailed report on 5 tasks accomplished last week – is completely conventional in the service industry when there’s new management. It is only causing screams and panics because it is government.”

“This is a trivial task,” Musk replied.

Ana Mostarac commented on all the panic over Musk’s request.

“If you’ve worked in the private sector, you’re familiar with this. It’s standard practice to report what you’ve accomplished to your manager. And if you’ve been a manager, you know how crucial it is to clarify expectations and priorities on a regular cadence.

“Now, government sector employees are being asked to do the same. The request is being labeled “harassment” and described as creating a “hostile work environment,” with some even suggesting a class action lawsuit for “undue stress and financial harm.”

“Why should government sector employees be held to a different standard? If anything, shouldn’t they be held to a higher standard, given the importance of their work?”

Musk explained why he made the request:

The reason this matters is that a significant number of people who are supposed to be working for the government are doing so little work that they are not checking their email at all!

In some cases, we believe non-existent people or the identities of dead people are being used to collect paychecks. In other words, there is outright fraud.
