From Fox News: A Boston-area school district has decided against adjusting its residency policy for matriculating students after migrant advocacy groups demanded change, with an administrator saying claims made by the critics “are just not true.”
The Lawyers for Civil Rights and Massachusetts Advocates for Children sent a letter to school administrators in Saugus, a town 10 miles north of Boston, alleging that the requirement to fill out the town census and other “overly-stringent residency or proof-of-identity requirements” violate the state and federal constitution.
Two advocacy groups have recently pressured Saugus public schools to revise their policy, following a surge of migrants into Massachusetts that has strained state resources.
The advocacy groups said the policy went into effect prior to the 2023-2024 school year and stipulated that pupils must be “legal residents whose actual residence is in Saugus” and that guardians must identify themselves with passports or other government photo IDs.
The school reportedly implemented the residency rule two days after Democrat Gov. Maura Healey announced a state of emergency in response to the migrant influx. The policy requires all students to be “legal residents whose actual residence is in Saugus.”
The Boston Herald wrote: The policy states that families who move to Saugus must complete the town census to register their children for public schools. Parents or guardians of new students must also provide documents demonstrating proof of residency, occupancy, and specific identification documents such as a valid Massachusetts driver’s license or U.S. passport.
This infuriated the migrant rights activists. More from the Boston Herald: Two advocacy groups are demanding that the Saugus School Committee immediately revise an admission policy that they say places an “undue burden on immigrant and mixed-status families” and violates their constitutional rights.
“Denying children the right to go to school is not only cruel, it’s also illegal,” Legal Director at Massachusetts Advocates for Children Diana Santiago fumed in a statement, adding, “School districts should be welcoming students, not making harmful and misleading statements designed to deter enrollment.”
The migrant advocacy groups claim that the residency rule has a “chilling” effect on migrant and mixed-status families.
However, Saugus School is not budging, and have confirmed that they do not discriminate against any student based on their immigration status, but simply note that students need to attend school in the district in which they reside.
Over the past year, Boston residents have repeatedly voiced their outrage over the changes that have happened to their “sanctuary city” since the influx of illegal aliens have poured in and taken over every aspect of the city, including their airports, community centers and more.
