REPORT: Mayor Mamdani ignites outrage after photo-op at notorious NYC jail: ‘F—ing ridiculous’

From Fox News: As New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has been embracing his Muslim faith amid Ramadan, he decided to break his religious fast with inmates who share his faith, in New York’s notorious Rikers Island jail, calling it “one of the most meaningful evenings” he’s had as mayor.

Although Mamdani has visited Rikers Island in the past as a state legislator, this marked his first visit as mayor of New York City.

Shortly before arriving, he reiterated his pledge to shut down the jail and have the city absorb the incarcerated population into its borough-based jails. He also hinted at plans to hire a facilitator to expedite those plans.

“This is me just being a Muslim New Yorker,” Mamdani said during the visit to Rikers, according to NPR. “There are some for whom that is a political act.”

Joining the Muslim mayor at Rikers Island was Yusef Salaam, a member of the so-called “Central Park Five” who were exonerated of a 1989 rape and assault. Salaam currently serves as a member of the New York City Council, the report explains.

Fox News points out that the Rikers Island prison is notorious for its violent criminals. And yet, in Mamdani’s post, he called them “New Yorkers in custody.” He wrote:

Earlier this week, I broke fast at Rikers Island with New Yorkers in custody, Department of Correction staff, Commissioner Stanley Richards, and Councilmember Yusef Salaam.

It was a night that will stay with me for quite some time. People sharing what little they have: breaking bread, offering prayer, making space for one another’s dignity even in the hardest place.

In a system too often defined by what it takes, I was reminded of what it means to give—mercy, dignity, and humanity.

May we extend that mercy as far as we can. Eid Mubarak to all.

Mamdani is being blasted over his post.

““New Yorkers in custody” is quite the phrase,” one X user mocked.

“Have you done anything with any other religion? Or are we all to be Muslim now?” another asked.

“The people in Rikers are not small time crooks or weed sellers..You speak of dignity; if it was so important to them, they wouldn’t have risked it,” another X user pointed out.

“Maybe America should be told why they are in Rikers to begin with. Petty theft…I think not,” quipped X user Lernwell.

Fraud investigator Sam Antar mocked, “If you commit a violent crime in NYC, Zohran Mamdani has your back.”

Rafael Mangual wrote, “Perhaps you might consider extending mercy, dignity, and humanity to the victims of the offenders you’ve chosen to elevate.”

Journalist Ben Bergquam wrote, “Communist and Jihadist traitor. I pray New York and America wake up before it’s too late.”

“How come we never see Passover celebrations at Rikers Island??????” another person asked.

Newsmax host Rob Schmitt wrote, “Mayor likes to hang out with the people who victimize us. Fucking ridiculous.”

Peter Savodnik wrote, “It’s good to treat those in jails and prisons with humanity; the strength of the polity corresponds to that. But one wonders whether it ever occurred to the mayor to dine with the countless New Yorkers whose lives have been destroyed or upended by his new friends behind bars.”
