From Fox News: A Durham, North Carolina, man has turned his life around after receiving grave medical news.

Derek Barnett, 55, was diagnosed with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease 10 years ago, according to a report from SWNS.

At his heaviest, Barnett weighed 240 pounds and was a size 38.

Barnett, a construction worker who is currently unemployed due to health issues, brushed off his diagnosis, telling SWNS that he “didn’t think anything of it.”

However, the report explains that Barnett’s condition continued to get worse, until he was diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma, or liver cancer. In January 2024, he was handed a letter from his doctor saying he only had about 6 months to live if the cancer continued to grow.

Barnett’s doctors suggested one thing he could do to improve his chances was to lose weight. Finally, Barnett took it seriously, and says he went on a fruit diet.

Barnett said he began only eating “very tiny meals” throughout the day, along with a lot of his favorite fruits.

“I do protein shakes, too. I’m not a vegetarian, but I don’t eat meat much, because it’s too filling for me.,” Barnett said, noting that he would eat watermelon, apples, oranges, grapes, and whatever fruit was in season.

He recently reached a record-low weight of 164 pounds, says he feels great, and his “scores are looking fantastic.” He will get an update on his prognosis in February.
