REPORT: Mamdani to be sworn in at abandoned NYC subway station

From The Hill: New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani (D) will hold a private swearing-in ceremony late Wednesday night at an abandoned subway station built more than a century ago.

“When Old City Hall Station first opened in 1904 — one of New York’s 28 original subway stations — it was a physical monument to a city that dared to be both beautiful and build great things that would transform working peoples’ lives,” Mamdani said in a short statement.

“That ambition need not be a memory confined only to our past, nor must it be isolated only to the tunnels beneath City Hall: it will be the purpose of the administration fortunate enough to serve New Yorkers from the building above.”

Mamdani, 34, was born in Uganda and only became a U.S. Citizen in 2018. He also still holds citizenship in Uganda. He will be the first Muslim mayor of New York City, and also the first Democrat Socialist to hold the position.

Mamdani will first be sworn into office by New York Attorney General Letitia James, a far-left Democrat, in the abandoned subway station.

In a second ceremony outside the City Hall, Mamdani will be sworn in by Socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).

Democrat Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is also expected to attend the second ceremony.

After the swearing-in ceremony, a public block party will be held outside City Hall Plaza with 4,000 ticketed guests, the report explains.

James cheered, “I’m honored to swear in @ZohranKMamdani at the Old City Hall subway station at the turn of the new year. Our subways connect us all, and they represent exactly what our next mayor is fighting for: a city every New Yorker can thrive in.”
