From the New York Post: Philanthropist Elizabeth Simons, daughter of the late billionaire hedge fund investor Jamie Simons, donated $250,000 to the pro-Zohran Mamdani super PAC New Yorkers for Lower Costs.
The contribution is the largest made to the group promoting the Democratic socialist nominee’s mayoral campaign, which has already raised nearly $2 million from nearly 300 separate donations.
Simons is chairwoman of the board of directors of the Heising-Simons Foundation, which she co-founded with her husband, Mark Heising.
James Simons founded Renaissance Technologies, and he and wife, Marilyn, donated $1 billion to his former employer, Stony Brook University, where he was a math professor.
James Simons died last year. His net worth was estimated at $31.4 billion.
Mamdani’s acceptance of the hefty donation from a billionaire is especially ironic, since he declared during an MSNBC interview in June that he didn’t think billionaires should exist.
Meet The Press host Kristen Welker asked, “You are self-described Democratic Socialist. Do you think that billionaires have a right to exist?”
Mamdani replied, “I don’t think that we should have billionaires because frankly it is so much money in a moment of such inequality and ultimately what we need more of is equality across the city and across the state and country and I look forward to work with everyone, including billionaires, to make a city that is fair for all of us.”
Now he’s accepting big checks from billionaires.
