From the Daily Caller: Many working-class Americans who previously voted Democratic are expressing skepticism about the party being able to regain their vote in future elections, the New York Times (NYT) reported Tuesday.
Several working-class interviewees told the NYT that they struggled with their decisions to vote for former President Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election. The report comes as Democrats attempt to persuade voters to embrace their ideas ahead of the upcoming midterms and 2028 White House election.
“I think I’m done with the Democrats,” Desmond Smith, a black man who voted for Biden in 2020, told the NYT. Smith told the outlet that he voted for President Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election.
When asked how the Democratic Party could win his vote back, Smith told the NYT that Democrats need to “fight for Americans instead of fighting for everybody else.”
Below is a critical excerpt from the New York Times report:
An in-depth post-election study from Pew Research Center suggests that about 5 percent of Mr. Biden’s voters in 2020 switched to Mr. Trump in 2024, while roughly 15 percent of those voters stayed home last year. Mr. Trump retained more of his 2020 voters than Mr. Biden did, a crucial factor in winning the election.
Polling on the current attitudes of those Biden defectors is limited, but it is clear the Democratic brand, broadly, continues to struggle. A Wall Street Journal poll released in late July found that the party’s image was at its lowest point in more than three decades, with just 33 percent of voters saying they held a favorable view of Democrats.
@pewresearch found that a good portion of foreign-born US citizens shifted right in 2024 vs 2020, and voted for Trump in 2024.The swing among Asian Americans is especially notable. https://t.co/R3dMsOEMU8 pic.twitter.com/dV356oGKPH

Trump improved his performance among several groups in 2024 relative to 2020 and 2016:
– Hispanic voters: 36% voted for Trump in 2020 vs. 48% in 2024
– Black voters: 8% voted for Trump in 2020 vs. 15% in 2024
– Asian voters: 30% voted for Trump in 2020 vs. 40% in 2024— Pew Research Center (@pewresearch) June 26, 2025
A larger share of 2020 Trump voters than 2020 Biden voters turned out in 2024, and Trump had an edge among those who didn’t vote in the earlier election.
