From CBS News: Lara Trump will step down as co-chair of the Republican National Committee as she considers a number of potential options with her father-in-law, President-elect Donald Trump, set to return to the White House.
Among those possibilities is replacing Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, whom Trump tapped to be the next secretary of state. If Rubio is confirmed, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis will choose who takes the seat through the remainder of Rubio’s term, which expires in 2026.
“It is something I would seriously consider,” she told The Associated Press in an interview. “If I’m being completely transparent, I don’t know exactly what that would look like. And I certainly want to get all of the information possible if that is something that’s real for me. But yeah, I would 100% consider it.”
Elected as RNC co-chair in March, Lara Trump was a key player in the Republicans retaking the White House and control of the Senate while maintaining a narrow House majority. What she does next could shape Republican politics, given her elevated political profile and her ties to the incoming president.
In a statement on X Sunday night, Lara wrote:
Serving as the @GOP co-chair throughout the course of the most consequential election in American history has truly been the honor of my life. At the RNC, we had three distinct goals:
1) surpass all fundraising records
2) build the largest army of lawyers and poll watchers to ensure election integrity, and,
3) turn out millions of Americans and low prepencity voters during early voting.
We accomplished all three. The job I came to do is now complete and I intend to formally step down from the RNC at our next meeting.
Thank you to our incredible team at the RNC, our amazing @ChairmanWhatley, and, of course, thank you to President @realDonaldTrump — we are so proud of you and I’m grateful you trusted me in this position.

Last month, Maye Musk, Elon Musk’s mother, responded to a post suggesting that Lara Trump should be appointed to fill Rubio’s senate seat.
Ms. Musk wrote, “The next senator for Florida should be @LaraLeaTrump. The Senate is an old man’s club. We desperately need a smart, young, outspoken woman who will reveal their secrets. Also, I’m not a political expert.”
