From the New York Post: Mayor Eric Adams was temporarily blocked Monday from taking any steps to allow the return of federal immigration officials on Rikers Island.

Manhattan Judge Mary Rosado issued the temporary restraining order at the request of the City Council, which sued to block ICE and other federal law enforcement agents from setting up shop at the troubled jail complex.

“City Hall and all other New York City government officials, officers, personnel, and agencies are prohibited from taking any steps toward negotiating, signing, or implementing any Memorandum of Understanding with the federal government regarding federal law enforcement presence on Department of Correction property,” Rosado wrote.

The order is in place until at least Friday morning, when both sides will argue the case in court.

ABOUT THIS JUDGE: Mary V. Rosado, a Democrat, is a judge of the New York Supreme Court 1st Judicial District. She won the seat in the November 2018 election, and assumed office in 2019. Her current term ends in 2032.

Adams reacted last week after the New York City Council sued him for allowing ICE to have access to the prison.

New York City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, a Democrat who is running to take Adams’ seat as Mayor, initiated the lawsuit.  She is also pushing to have Rikers Island closed entirely.

Adrienne Adams declared the lawsuit is an effort to “protect the rights and safety of all New Yorkers against attacks by the Trump administration,” and claims that Mayor Adams’ attempts to end criminal gang activity is “making New Yorkers afraid.”
