From the New York Post: For the first time ever, Muhammad was ranked as one of the top 10 most popular baby names in the Big Apple.
The name tied for the No. 9 spot as one of the most common names for newborns in the city 2023 — landing among favorites that have been staples in the five boroughs for years, according to data released Friday.
Muhammad was just one of two names to break into the top 10 names for the first time ever, but its surge in popularity shouldn’t be too surprising — it was also the most common name given to baby boys in England and Wales in 2023.
According to a press release from New York Department of Health, there were a total of 98,389 babies born in the New York City area in 2023, broken out as follows:
39,484 – Manhattan
10,613 – Bronx
22,297 – Brooklyn
20,148 – Queens
5,847 – Staten Island
Liam has been the top name for boys since 2016, with 743 baby boys in the NYC area being given that name in 2023.
Meanwhile, Emma has been the top choice for girls since 2017, with 382 baby girls in the NYC area receiving that name in 2023.
The top 10 most popular names for baby girls in New York City in 2023 were:
- Emma
- Mia
- Sophia
- Olivia
- Isabella
- Amelia
- Leah
- Chloe
- Luna
- Sofia
The top 10 names for boys were:
- Liam
- Noah
- David
- Lucas
- Jacob
- Ethan
- Joseph
- Dylan
- Michael* (tied)
- Muhammad* (tied)
Vintage names are also making a comeback: Esther (12), Miriam (15), Eleanor (56), Ruth (102), Norah (105), Beatrice (111), Harriet (123), Doris (124), Meredith (124), Leonardo (65), Maximus (133), Graham (137), Bruce (142), and Bernard (145).
