From the Washington Examiner: House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) ordered that U.S. flags be flown at full-staff on Inauguration Day, issuing a brief pause to President Joe Biden’s order to display flags at half-staff in commemoration of the late President Jimmy Carter.
Johnson issued the order Tuesday, noting flags will be at full-staff “to celebrate our country coming together behind the inauguration of our 47th President, Donald Trump.”
Flags will then be returned to the Carter mourning period order on the following day, according to Johnson’s order.
Biden issued the order on Dec. 30, just one day after Carter’s death, to fly flags at half-staff until Jan. 28. That issue applies to all U.S. flags at the White House as well as all public buildings and grounds, military posts, and naval stations as well as on federal naval vessels throughout the United States and its territories.
The U.S. Flag Code of Conduct dictates that flags are to be displayed at half-staff for “30 days from the death of the President or a former President.”
The U.S. flag code also allows for exceptions to be made:
Any rule or custom pertaining to the display of the flag of the United States of America, set forth herein, may be altered, modified, or repealed, or additional rules with respect thereto may be prescribed, by the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the United States, whenever he deems it to be appropriate or desirable; and any such alteration or additional rule shall be set forth in a proclamation.
On January 20th, the flags at the Capitol will fly at full-staff to celebrate our country coming together behind the inauguration of our 47th President, Donald Trump.
The flags will be lowered back to half-staff the following day to continue honoring President Jimmy Carter.
