From the Washington Times: Rep. Dusty Johnson plans to introduce legislation that would give President-elect Donald Trump authority to purchase the Panama Canal.
Mr. Johnson’s office confirmed to The Washington Times that he could present the measure as early as Thursday, barring finalization of the bill’s text. His effort comes after Mr. Trump has floated retaking control of the canal, among other foreign territories.
“I think it is a Teddy Roosevelt moment,” the South Dakota Republican told Fox News, which first reported his plan to bring a bill to greenlight Mr. Trump’s wishes. “And frankly, America used to run this canal, and it was very well run under American leadership.”
Trump has condemned former President Jimmy Carter’s selling of the Panama Canal in 1977 for $1 as a “disgrace.”
The bill Johnson has drafted would reportedly allow the U.S. to repurchase the Panama Canal for $1.

Human Events editor Jack Posobiec announced last month, “Did You Know: The most recent US – Panama Treaty includes the right for the US to take action to keep the canal open if its neutrality is threatened. Like, for example, selling the canal operations to China. I’m just planting seeds.”
Conservative attorney Wally Zimolong responded, “100% correct. The Panama Canal Neutrality Agreement (as amended), which is distinct from the agreement that (foolishly) turned over the Canal to Panama, provides for this in at least two places.”
