In the wake of the ISIS-inspired terror attack in New Orleans this week, in which dozens of people celebrating New Year’s were horrifically mowed down by a Muslim man driving a speeding pickup truck, attention has been drawn to other terror attacks that have occurred in the U.S. in the past two decades.
From The Hill: The man who drove a truck into a New Orleans crowd on New Year’s Day had recently pledged allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), according to the FBI.
While most ISIS-linked attacks have occurred in the Middle East and Europe, individuals connected to the militant Islamic group have planned or carried out attacks in the U.S.
The Hill then provides the following list of ‘ISIS-inspired’ terror attacks:
June 12, 2016 – Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida. Omar Mateen opened fire on a gay nightclub. 49 killed, 53 wounded.
December 2, 2016 – San Bernardino, California shooting. A married couple, Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik, opened fire on a Department of Public Health Christmas party and training event. 14 killed, 22 injured.
October 31, 2017 – New York City truck attack. Sayfullo Habibullaevic Sipov drove a pickup truck and mowed down people on a bike path along the Hudson River. 8 killed, 13 injured.
October 23, 2014 – Hatchet attack in Queens, New York. Zale H. Thompson, a recent Muslim convert attacked and wounded four NYPD police officers.
December 11, 2017 – New York City Subway bombing by Akayed Ullah, 27, a Salafi Muslim immigrant from Bangladesh. 4 people wounded.
May 3, 2015 – Curtis Culwell Center in Garland, Texas. Two gunman attempted an ISIS-inspired mass shooting, but police shot and killed them both, thwarting their terror attack.
Additional Islamic terror attacks committed on U.S. soil include:
September 11, 2001 – The 9/11 terror attack. 4 planes were hijacked by Muslim terrorists and crashed into both World Trade Center towers, and the Pentagon. The 4th hijacked plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after passengers overpowered the hijackers. A total of 2,996 souls were lost.
November 5, 2009 – The Ft. Hood Attack. Nidal Hasan, a U.S. Army major and psychiatrist, fatally shot 13 people and injured more than 30 others.
April 15, 2013 – Boston Marathon Bombing. Brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev planted two homemade pressure cooker bombs that detonated near the finish line of the race, killing 3 people and injuring hundreds more. 17 people lost limbs.
January 26, 2017 – Fort Lauderdale Airport Mass Shooting. 5 people were killed, and 6 others were injured. The shooter, Esteban Santiago-Ruiz, a former Alaska Army National Guard member, admitted AHEAD of the shooting that he had been watching online videos by the Islamic State but said he did not intend to hurt anyway. The FBI had urged him to seek mental health treatment.
