REPORT: Google rolls out ‘preferred sources’ feature… here’s how it works.

Google has now conceded that the public should be able to choose where they get their news, so the search engine giant has come out with a new feature called “Preferred Sources” that allows users to customize their online news experience.

Below is the announcement Google shared in a press release on August 12:

Everyone has their own preferences about where and how they get their news, so we’re launching a new feature in Search that lets you customize your experience to see more from your favorite sites within Top Stories.

With the launch of Preferred Sources in the U.S. and India, you can select your favorite sources and stay up to date on the latest content from the sites you follow and subscribe to — whether that’s your favorite sports blog or a local news outlet. Preferred Sources is rolling out today and will be broadly available in the coming days.

When you select your preferred sources, you’ll start to see more of their articles prominently displayed within Top Stories, when those sources have published fresh and relevant content for your search.

Here’s how to select your sources:

  • Search for a topic that’s in the news and click on the icon to the right of Top Stories.
  • Search and select your preferred sources.
  • Refresh your results and see more from your favorite sites.

Once you select your sources, they will appear more frequently in Top Stories or in a dedicated “From your sources” section on the search results page. You’ll still see content from other sites, and can manage your selections at any time.

Google explained that you can selected as many sources as you want for your top preferred sites.
