From the Daily CallerGeorge Simion, the leader of the right-wing Union of Romanians (AUR) party, has emerged as the frontrunner in Romania’s upcoming presidential election, polling reveals.

Simion is projected to win the first round of voting on May 4 with approximately 29 percent of the vote, according to Politico’s Poll of Polls. This puts him ahead of his nearest rivals, former National Liberal Party leader Crin Antonescu at 22 percent and Bucharest Mayor Nicușor Dan at 20 percent.

Simion’s rise to prominence comes in the wake of the controversial decision to annul the results of the previous presidential election held in December. That election saw Călin Georgescu, another right-wing candidate, unexpectedly win the first round. However, Romanian authorities canceled the results, alleging election interference and Russian “aggressive” hybrid operations, Politico reported.

The 38-year-old Simion has positioned himself as a champion of democracy and the rule of law. The candidate told Politico in a recent interview that his campaign is a fight to “reinstate democracy, the people’s will, the rule of law and the constitutional order.”

He has also aligned himself with the U.S. MAGA movement, recently visiting Washington to meet with former Trump adviser Steve Bannon and author and activist Jack Posobeic.

Georgescu has been barred from running for office again, but Simion has vowed that if he wins, he will give Georgescu a spot in his administration, perhaps as prime minister.

So, if he wins, Romania could ultimately have BOTH conservative leaders at the helm, in a direct rebuke to the Romanian authorities who annulled Georgescu’s victory in December.

In a social media post on Sunday, Simion announced, “My colleagues have submitted a draft law to prevent the Constitutional Court to annul elections without clear evidence.
It’s imperative to harmonize national legislation with #VeniceCommission’ recommendations. 🇷🇴Fair & free elections! Stop abuses!”

In a bold move, Simion showed up for a recent debate with the other candidates, then declared on live television that he would not participate in the debate, out of respect for Georgescu. He then walked out, with his entire team following him.

The new election will take place on Sunday, May 4, then a runoff election will be held on May 18 between the top two candidates to determine the winner.

Simion is already sounding the alarm over the ‘dispora voting’ for Romanian citizens outside the country.

“Diaspora vote will start on Friday at 7am and there are FEWER BALLOT ballot papers than expected voters! We urge @MAERomania, Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP) and Central Electoral Bureau (BEC) to urgently take the necessary measures to increase the number of ballot papers for diaspora. Every Romanian citizen must be able to vote!” he declared.
