From the Washington Examiner: Former Oregon Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer, President Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Labor Department, was confirmed by the Senate with bipartisan support.
The Senate voted 67-32 to confirm DeRemer, 56, to the role. The confirmation of Chavez-DeRemer, who had the support of the Teamsters president but was opposed by some free-market conservatives, could signal a shift in the party toward more of an embrace of organized labor. Three Republicans voted against the appointment: Sens. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Rand Paul (R-KY), and Ted Budd (R-NC).
In a statement after Chavez-DeRemer was confirmed, Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA), the chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, drew a contrast to the Labor Department under President Joe Biden.
“With President Trump back in office, we have an opportunity to enact a pro-America agenda at the Department of Labor that puts workers first,” Cassidy said. “Secretary Chavez-DeRemer is committed to this mission and ready to work with the HELP Committee to secure a better future for all workers.”

Sen. Katie Britt (R-Ala.) announced: “With tonight’s confirmation of Lori Chavez-DeRemer as Labor Secretary, the Senate will have confirmed President Trump’s entire Cabinet—faster than any of the last three administrations. Promises made, promises kept as we deliver the President’s agenda for the American people.”
Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien issued the following statement:
“Lori Chavez-DeRemer will do an excellent job leading the U.S. Department of Labor. We are committed to fighting alongside her to protect the working class and strengthen our nation by putting workers first.
“Chavez-DeRemer earned support on both sides of the aisle, highlighting her ability to bridge divides and serve all Americans effectively. The Teamsters thank the bipartisan coalition of senators who put the needs of working people ahead of politics, and President Donald Trump for boldly nominating her to oversee the Department of Labor.
“There is no doubt Chavez-DeRemer is the best person for the job. We were proud to stand with her from the start.
“But let’s be clear — hardworking Americans should not forget who voted against them by trying to tank this nomination. Democratic holdouts participated in Chuck Schumer’s political theater instead of working together to get something done for working people. Unsurprisingly, Rand Paul did what he always does — shilled for Big Business and the union-busting National Right to Work Foundation.
“This system of political selfishness must be dismantled if workers are going to get ahead. The Teamsters will continue to work with anyone — regardless of political party — to address the needs of all workers and build a strong bipartisan block that returns the American worker to the forefront of policymaking.”
