From the Washington Times: The Justice Department has quietly dismissed charges against two Jordanian immigrants who were arrested after encroaching on a Marine base earlier this year, leaving a host of questions about the incident.
In court documents, the U.S. attorney in eastern Virginia said squelching the cases was in the interest of “the ends of justice” — boilerplate language that sheds little light on what happened.
The two men, Hamdan Yousef Hasan and Mohammed Khair Hassan Dabous, were stopped by sentries as they tried to drive onto Marine Corps Base Quantico in Prince William County in May.
They claimed to be making a delivery run and were asked to wait while their identities were checked, but Mr. Dabous, the driver, continued to move the box truck forward, military authorities said. The sentries raised the vehicle barriers and arrested the men.
On the original ‘serious incident’ report in May, immigration officials said Hasan was on the terror watch list. However, prosecutors reportedly waited until July before they ever filed charges in the case, then claimed in September that neither man was on a watch list.
Lawyers assigned to defend the two men claimed the whole thing was simply a misunderstanding due to a language barrier, and argued that Dabous was making legitimate deliveries in Quantico but didn’t understand the directions given about stopping at the gate.
Finally, on Oct. 3, federal prosecutors asked a judge to dismiss the charges, and the judge complied with the request.
At the time the men tried to drive onto the military base in May, Dabous, the driver, had a Virginia driver’s license, and there were Amazon packages in the vehicle.
The Washington Times explains that Hasan, who had crossed the border illegally in April, only had a Jordanian passport, and an ICE officer had confirmed at the time of the military base incident that he was on the terror watch list. It is still unclear why he was in the vehicle with Dabous.
Jon Feere, Director of Investigations at the Center for Immigration Studies, weighed in, writing, “The Biden admin has ignored about 5 letters from Congress on this case, we still don’t know what school one of them was attending, we don’t know why that foreign student was allowed to roam the country for a year after having his status canceled.
