REPORT: Feds Arrest Illegal Alien Who Served Only 3.5 Years in Prison for Killing Two Teens in Sanctuary State

From Breitbart: A twice-deported illegal alien, convicted of killing 19-year-olds Anna Varfolomeeva and Nicholay Osokin in the sanctuary state of California, has been taken into federal custody after serving just three and a half years in prison for vehicular manslaughter.

Varfolomeeva and Osokin, who were dating, were killed in November 2021 in Orange County, California, by Oscar Eduardo Ortega-Anguiano who was drunk, high, and driving 100 mph on the 205 freeway at the time. The teens were burned alive in the crash.

The following year, Ortega-Anguiano was convicted on two counts of vehicular manslaughter while drunk and sentenced to just 10 years in prison for killing Varfolomeeva and Osokin. Before the conviction, Ortega-Anguiano already had numerous felony convictions and had served time in California’s state prison system.

After serving just three and a half years in prison, Ortega-Anguiano was set to be released. As a result, Justice Department prosecutors took the illegal alien into custody, charging him as an illegal alien who illegally returned to the U.S. after being deported.

The report explains that Ortega-Anguiano, a Mexican national, was first deported from the U.S. in December 2016. At some point, he returned illegally, and was again deported in June 2018. He returned again, and racked up a lengthy criminal record. Then, in November 2021, he killed two innocent American teenagers.

U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli of California announced last Friday:

Oscar Eduardo Ortega, 43, of Mexico, was arraigned today in U.S. District Court in Santa Ana, where he pleaded not guilty to one count of being an illegal alien found in the United States following deportation. A federal magistrate judge ordered him jailed without bond. Trial is scheduled for September 8.

After being deported to Mexico twice, he returned to our country, where he killed two young people in a DUI accident and where he served only 3½ years out of a 10-year sentence in California state prison. Governor Newsom let down the victims’ families by allowing this criminal to be released from prison after barely serving a third of his sentence. The state of the criminal justice system in California is dire, the prisons are being emptied at lighting speed. Thankfully, the federal government is able to step in and help deliver justice for the victims and their families in this case.

Deputy DHS Secretary Troy Edgar also commented on the case, writing, “This illegal alien never should have been in our country, and he should certainly never have been given an early release after killing Anya Varfolomeev and Nikolay Osokin. California’s sanctuary state policies allowed this to happen.

“The grief will never go away, but we continue to pray for Anya and Nikolay’s families as well as all Americans harmed by illegal immigration. The Trump Administration will always put Americans first and keep our streets safe from illegal alien monsters.”

More from a DOJ press release:

According to the single-count indictment, Ortega previously was removed from the United States in December 2016 and June 2018. In November 2021, Ortega – while under the influence of alcohol and drugs and driving at speeds of 100 mph on the 405 freeway in Seal Beach – crashed into another car, killing the two 19-year-old victims inside.

In 2022, Ortega was convicted in Orange County Superior Court of two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and was sentenced to 10 years in California state prison. He was released from state prison after serving approximately 3½ years of his sentence.

On Thursday, he was taken into custody by U.S. immigration officials and is now in federal custody.

Ortega’s criminal history also includes felony convictions in October 2005 in Los Angeles Superior Court for grand theft of personal property and unlawful taking of a vehicle. In February 2014, Ortega was convicted in Orange County Superior Court of a felony charge of false imprisonment by violence and deceit.

An indictment contains allegations that a defendant has committed a crime. Every defendant is presumed to be innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.

If convicted, Ortega would face a statutory maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison.
