From the New York Post: The FBI and US Attorney’s Office in Albany have launched a criminal investigation into mortgage fraud claims against New York Attorney General Letitia James, a source familiar with the probe told The Post.
The investigation, first reported by the Albany Times Union, follows a request that the Justice Department investigate James, sent by Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William Pulte to the Justice Department last month.
New York’s Northern District, where Pulte’s referral was steered, is led by US Attorney John Sarcone III, an ally of President Trump.
Pulte’s letter alleged James “falsified records” to obtain favorable loans on a home she purchased in 2023 in Virginia and a Brooklyn brownstone she’s owned since 2001.

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) released the following statement:
“I commend the FBI and the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of New York for investigating New York Attorney General Letitia James over mortgage fraud. Nobody is above the law. These serious allegations—falsifying records to secure favorable loan terms on properties in Virginia and New York—threaten public trust in our institutions. The hypocrisy is staggering: Tish James allegedly committed the same crime that she falsely and illegally prosecuted President Donald Trump for.
“For years, I’ve led the charge against Tish James’ political weaponization and abuse of her office to target Trump and other political opponents illegally. In February 2024, I filed a bar complaint with the New York State Committee on Professional Standards, detailing how she violated ethical rules during her biased investigation and prosecution of Trump, including over 50 prejudicial social media posts in just the first five weeks of his civil fraud trial. Her weaponized lawfare campaign, which began the moment she announced her candidacy for Attorney General, undermined the impartiality expected of New York’s top prosecutor.
“Tish James’ actions embody the corruption among NY elected Democrats led by Kathy Hochul. I recently exposed how Governor Kathy Hochul and Albany Democrats secretly inserted language into the state budget to cover James’ legal expenses with taxpayer money. This abuse of power is an insult to New Yorkers already struggling with high taxes.
“The investigation into Letitia James is a vital step toward justice. I will continue to fight to expose NY corruption, protect constitutional rights, and hold these failed Democrat leaders in NY accountable.”

The New York Assembly GOP declared, “Letitia James has some explaining to do. And disgracefully, her political friends are giving her a $10M legal defense fund in the state budget. It’s the latest, absurd example of Albany’s ‘Do as I say, not as I do’ governing under One-Party Rule.”

Private investigator Sam Antar wrote: “Memo to @NewYorkStateAG Letitia James: The FBI probe in New York isn’t your only problem. According to The Guardian, a grand jury has now been empaneled in Virginia. Next up? The U.S. Postal Inspectors for mail and wire fraud—and the IRS for potential tax evasion. You can thank your lawyer, Abbe Lowell, for accelerating your downfall with that self-incriminating letter he sent to the Feds.”

Conservatives are mocking James, and noting how the tables have turned:
Ryan Fournier, National Chairman, Students for Trump, shared a photo from a moment when President Trump was sitting in a New York courtroom during a trial due to charges brought against him by James, who had wildly accused him of mortgage fraud and misrepresenting the value of his properties.
“If Letitia James’ is prosecuted and has to go to trial, I want Trump to show up and sit behind her just like this,” Fournier joked.

America First Legal threw one of James’ old social media posts back in her face.
On February 16, 2024, James had blasted out a string of posts on X, celebrating her ‘victory’ in her case against Trump, as a jury of liberal New Yorkers found him “guilty” of mortgage fraud and inflating his wealth and a radical Democrat judge ordered Trump and the Trump organization to pay a $450 million fine. The case is still under appeal.
“When powerful people cheat to get better loans, it comes at the expense of hardworking people. Everyday Americans cannot lie to a bank to get a mortgage, and if they did, our government would throw the book at them. There simply cannot be different rules for different people,” James had written.
America First Legal mocked:
