From the New York Post: The family of five aboard the doomed tourist helicopter that plummeted into the Hudson River on Thursday was in New York City to celebrate the birthday of one of their three young children, report said.
Agustin Escobar, his wife, Merce Camprubi Montal, and their three kids — ages 4, 5 and 11 — were killed along with the unidentified pilot when the chopper went down into the murky waters of the Hudson.
The family had just arrived in the Big Apple from Barcelona, Spain, to mark the birthday of one of their children, Spanish newspaper El Diario reported.
After touching down in the city, the family decided to spend their first day touring Manhattan by taking a scenic trip overlooking the Statue of Liberty.
Escobar has since been identified as the global CEO of rail infrastructure at Siemens Mobility, while his wife was a global commercialization manager at Siemens Energy, according to her LinkedIn profile. She was the granddaughter of Agustí Montal Costa, a former president of FC Barcelona soccer club.
The New York Helicopter Tours LLC released two photos taken of the family just prior to the doomed flight. In one photo, the happy family are seen smiling, standing in front of the helicopter. In another, they are seen seated inside the chopper.
The report states that the 36-year-old pilot, whose identity has not yet been released, radioed into his base shortly after takeoff that they were running out of fuel. Moments later, the helicopter plummeted from the sky into the river. However, the rotor blades appear to have come off in the air, as the helicopter fell first, then the blades fell separately.
This is the Escobar family visiting NYC from Spain.
They were excited for a helicopter tour around Manhattan.
These are their very last pics. Ever.
