From the New York Post: Mayor Zohran Mamdani has succeeded in at least one thing during his fresh-faced administration — infuriating everyone, including his typically ride-or-die lefty buds, over his bald-faced lie that the City Council’s budget plan cuts services.
Peeved City Council members roundly ripped Mamdani after he used one of his slick social-media videos Wednesday to call out Speaker Julie Menin by name and wrongly portray her budget proposal — an alternative to his doomsday version — as slashing billions of dollars from city agencies.
“This is deeply misleading and potentially harmful! I thought these four years were going to be different,” Councilman Kevin Riley (D-Bronx) — an obviously disappointed Mamdani backer — posted on X.

The Democrat Socialist Muslim mayor doubled down with the following:
Speaker Julie Menin’s preliminary budget proposal would result in slashing billions of dollars from agency budgets, which would force the City to cut services. Double counting previously identified savings, overestimating revenues, and exaggerating debt service savings does nothing to close a deficit.
This $6 billion proposal asks Albany for just one action – class size mandate relief. It refuses to address the deeper structural imbalance between the City and the State, or to increase taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and most profitable corporations. It effectively ensures this structural deficit will continue indefinitely.
Any proposal that claims we can close this gap without significant new revenue is unrealistic.

Democrat councilwoman Virginia Maloney blasted Mamdani:
I know math is hard, but the @NYCCouncil finance team did the work—digging into the details to find real solutions. Our budget response clearly says:
❌ NO increasing property taxes in the middle of an affordability crisis
❌ NO raiding the rainy day fund, a tool for true emergenciesUnder the @SpeakerMenin’s leadership, we focused on:
✅ Smart spending and strategic savings, line by line
✅ Maintaining city services, no reductions
✅ Revenue raisers, that don’t penalize hard working New Yorkers. The Mayor’s proposed City budget is a whopping $127 billion. The City’s not broke, we’re just badly managed. And we can balance this budget responsibly without putting our long-term fiscal health at risk.

A liberal candidate for NYC Assembly D54 even admitted to being confused over Mamdani’s statement:
I like what Mamdani is saying about “end the drain” soooo u are supposed to get back more from the government than you pay in taxes?
I’m just confused on the arguments he’s making here – he’s saying NYC shouldn’t pay more money than it gets back from NY state … but rich New Yorkers should pay more than they get back from NYC gov?
The reason NYC pays more to the state than it gets back is because it’s the richest city in American history… its budget is larger than every state except for 4 lol that’s why it pays more. It’s the exact same reason u want to tax the rich. I’m genuinely confused how you can make these contradictory statements in the same video.

Rich Azzopardi, a former spokesman for former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, also weighed in:
.@NYCMayor,
❌ Wants to raise spending $11B to fund giveaways & subsidize the wealthy
❌ Threatens a 9.5% tax hike on homeowners (also a de facto rent hike)
❌ Was warned by 4 ratings agencies his reckless actions risk NYC’s bond rating;Plays the intellectually dishonest card.
