Newly released details indicates the man caught pointing a gun at then-former President Donald Trump while he was on Florida golf course had bigger plans – including trying to obtain a rocket launcher to blow Trump’s plane out of the sky.
From Fox News: Federal prosecutors revealed that Ryan Routh, the accused would-be assassin of President Donald Trump, sought to obtain military-grade weapons – including a rocket launcher – from a Ukrainian contact as part of his alleged assassination plot.
Routh told his associate to “send me a rpg [rocket-propelled grenade] or stinger, and I will see what we can do… [Trump] is not good for Ukraine,” according to court documents obtained by Fox News.
The pair discussed Routh’s purchase options, with Routh inquiring if his associate could “ship it to me???” before explaining his intent for the military-grade weapons: “I need equipment so that Trump cannot get elected.”
Routh went on to say the weapons of war get lost “all the time on the battlefield” and “one missing would not be noticed,” according to the court records.
Prosecutors say that Routh also floated the idea of obtaining a rocket or missile launcher, with the suspect sending his associate an image of President Trump’s plane and writing, “Trump’s plane, he gets on and off daily.”
“Attempting to purchase a destructive device to blow up President Trump’s airplane lies squarely within the realm of an attempt on his life, and Routh’s statements about the purpose of the purchase—that he ‘need[s] equipment so that Trump cannot get elected—drives home his intent,” the new DOJ filing reads.

Routh, 58, was caught on September 15, 2024, after he set up a sniper hideout in the bushes near Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, then waited for hours for Trump to appear. Secret Service agents spotted him with his rifle, before Trump arrived, and opened fire on him. Routh then fled the scene, abandoning his rifle. He was arrested later the same day.
According to the report, Routh had been plotting to assassinate Trump for at least six months, as he explored different options on how to do it.
As far back as February 2024, Routh reportedly corresponded with a contact named “Ramiro” in Mexico on WhatsApp, asking for smuggling assistance. Just days ahead of the attempted attack, Routh told “Ramiro” he would be in Mexico City after Sept. 15.
Routh had been scouting out West Palm Beach and tracking Trump’s locations months ahead of the golf course attempt, and reportedly gave a friend, identified as L.P., a box containing a “Dear World” letter outlining the assassination plan, burner phones and ammunition.
Routh’s trial is scheduled to start September 8, 2025.
Donald Trump Jr. reacted to the bombshell news, writing, “If you think it’s bad that Ukraine never said thank you for everything the United States has done for them, the fact that they seemingly did not tell us that this sociopath literally tried to buy arms from them to assassinate my father seems like a much bigger deal. Wonder why?!?”

New DOJ filings reveal that Ryan Wesley Routh, the man accused of attempting to assassinate Donald Trump in 2024, tried to buy a rocket launcher from someone he believed was a Ukrainian arms contact.
“Send me an RPG or Stinger and I will see what we can do,” he allegedly wrote. “Trump is not good for Ukraine.”
The filings also cite a letter where Routh explicitly stated his intent: “It is up to you now to finish the job. I will offer $150,000 to whomever can complete the job.”
Officials say Routh surveilled Trump’s golf course in Florida for weeks and had detailed maps, weapons, burner phones, and travel plans to Mexico.
The FBI found fingerprints on the rifle aimed at Trump, a search history on how to flee, and handwritten notes urging Trump’s assassination.
All of this happened during the Biden administration, which had previously warned about “MAGA extremists” while missing clear threats from the other side.

It looks like timing alone also may have helped Trump escape the Florida golf course unscathed last year.
Routh allegedly decided to move forward with his assassination plot and lie in wait at the golf course BEFORE receiving a .50 caliber rifle from a contact.
