A municipal judge who specializes in immigration issues and is a former illegal alien himself has abruptly resigned after FBI agents raided his law offices Thursday in Providence, Rhode Island.

According to local reports, a line of black SUVs and other vehicles were seen lined up outside the offices of Judge Joseph Molina Flynn as federal agents served a court-authorized search warrant on his office. It is unknown what they were seeking.

From WPRI.com: The investigation into Molina Flynn started before President Donald Trump took office and is unrelated to his immigration-related executive orders, according to two people with direct knowledge about the investigation who would only speak on the condition of anonymity.

They said federal agents are looking at Molina Flynn over allegations that he defrauded people seeking representation on immigration-related matters. He had not been charged as of Thursday afternoon.

According to his website, Molina Flynn has offices in Boston and Providence, and he handles immigration, family and criminal matters. He moved to the United States from Colombia when he was nine years old, according to a biography on his website, and he obtained lawful permanent status 15 years later before becoming a U.S. citizen.

NBC10 reporter Brian Crandall posted a video as FBI agents entered the judge’s office and wrote, “FBI, Homeland Security agents raid office of well known Providence immigration lawyer.”

In an update, Crandall added, “Agents are in the office of Joseph Molina Flynn, who specializes in immigration law. His bio notes he was previously undocumented before becoming a citizen. He was also a municipal judge in Central Falls, but the mayor’s office says he has now resigned.”

Crandall shared another video of agents carrying out boxes and wrote, “Federal agents take boxes of files out of the of office of Providence lawyer Joseph Molina Flynn, who specializes in immigration work. FBI and US Attorney’s office won’t say what raid is focused on. But it appears it had been in the works for a while, not the last few days.”

A copy of the now-resigned judge’s bio reads: “Molina Flynn made history as the first openly gay and formerly undocumented person to serve as a judge in Central Falls. Originally from Colombia, he arrived in the United States at age 9 on a visitor’s visa, which he overstayed, becoming undocumented.”
