From Fox News: Spring break travelers heading to popular destinations in the United States may want to be extra cautious about what they bring home.
Pest control reports indicate that bedbug infestations linked to travel appear to be increasing in several Southern states.
A recent report from Terminix in Atlanta ranked Georgia sixth nationwide for bedbug service requests among the 50 most affected U.S. cities.
Other southern states such as Florida, Texas and Tennessee have also reported growing concerns tied to travel-related infestations.
The report explains that bed bugs are more often found in cheaper hotels frequented by younger, tourists, and in hotels that experience frequent guest turnover and more people crowded into rooms, making it harder for the rooms to be thoroughly cleaned.
The tiny pests usually hide along mattress seams, behind headboards, inside furniture joints and near baseboards, biting people when they sleep, then often going home with them in their luggage.
To keep the bed bugs from spreading into your home, experts recommend placing travel clothes straight from your suitcase into the washing machine using hot water, then into the clothes dryer, and run the dryer on high heat for about 30 to 45 minutes.
According to a report by Terminix, the top 10 “bed bug cities” are:
1.) Philadelphia
2.) New York
3.) Cleveland-Akron (Canton)
4.) Los Angeles
5.) Dallas – Ft. Worth
6.) Atlanta
7.) Houston
8.) Washington, D.C (Hagerstown)
9.) San Francisco – Oak – San Jose
10.) Indianapolis
