REPORT: Authorities release mugshot of Chinese student charged in biological smuggling

From Fox News: Authorities have released a mugshot of the Chinese national accused of smuggling undeclared biological material into the United States.

Chengxuan Han was initially scheduled to appear in federal court Wednesday to face charges of smuggling goods into the U.S. and making false statements, according to court documents obtained by Fox News Digital. However, her detention hearing was cut short after her court-appointed attorney requested more time due to “some additional matters pertinent to the issue of bond.”

Han is a citizen of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and Ph.D. student at Wuhan’s College of Life Science and Technology in the Huazhong University of Science and Technology, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ).

Han is the third Chinese national arrested this month for allegedly smuggling items into the U.S. University of Michigan post-doctoral research fellow Yunqing Jian and her boyfriend, Zunyong Liu, were arrested after allegedly bringing an “agroterrorism agent” into the U.S. to study at a University of Michigan laboratory.

The packages Han sent to the U.S. reportedly contained roundworm-related biomaterials.

According to a press release by the Justice Department:

In 2024 and 2025, Han sent four packages to the United States from the PRC containing concealed biological material. These packages were addressed to individuals associated with a laboratory at the University of Michigan.

On June 8, 2025, Han arrived at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport on a J1 visa. Customs and Border Protection officers conducted an inspection of Han, during which Han made false statements about the packages and the biological materials she had previously shipped to the United States.

On Monday, FBI Director Kash Patel announced:

Yesterday, @FBIDetroit arrested a second Chinese national on charges of smuggling biological materials into the U.S. and lying to federal agents. This individual is Chengxuan Han, a citizen of the People’s Republic of China and a Ph.D. student in Wuhan, China. Han is the third PRC connected individual charged on similar allegations in recent days.

Han is alleged to have sent four packages to the U.S. from China containing a biological material related to round worms — addressed to individuals associated with a lab at the University of Michigan.

Upon arriving at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport on June 8, Han allegedly made false statements to federal officials regarding the packages she had previously mailed — and had erased her electronic device just days prior. In a follow up interview with FBI and ICE HSI agents, Han admitted to sending the packages and lying about their contents.

This case is part of a broader effort from the FBI and our federal partners to heavily crack down on similar pathogeon smuggling operations, as the CCP works relentlessly to undermine America’s research institutions.

On June 3, Rep. Ben Cline (R-Va.) announced: “DOJ just charged two Chinese nationals, Yunqing Jian and Zunyong Liu, for smuggling Fusarium graminearum—a fungus flagged as a potential agro-terror weapon—into the US for their work at the University of Michigan lab. The CCP has a long record of exploiting America’s universities, and these individuals used their campus access to traffic dangerous pathogens—putting our food supply and national security at immediate risk.”

Six days later, the third Chinese was arrested. Cline added: “Another Chinese national. Another University of Michigan lab. Another biological smuggling plot. A PRC citizen from Wuhan sent round worm samples and lied to federal agents. How many more warnings do we need? The CCP is exploiting our universities.”

Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) also seized on the report Monday, writing, “A THIRD Chinese national has been caught smuggling a potential bioweapon into America. Food security is national security, and I am working to ensure America is safe from the threat posed by Communist China right here in our own backyard.”
