REPORT: Authorities announce cause of death for six people killed at Colorado farm

From Fox News: The six people who died at a Colorado dairy farm in August were exposed to toxic hydrogen sulfide gas, authorities said on Thursday, citing autopsies and toxicology reports on the deceased.

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), exposure to hydrogen sulfide gas at “very high concentrations can quickly lead to death.”

The autopsy reports did not indicate the circumstances of the deaths.

Hydrogen sulfide is colorless, but has a sulfurous smell, similar to rotten eggs. OSHA warns that those who have breathed in enough hydrogen sulfide to become unconscious but survive can still struggle with long-term health effects, such as headaches and poor attention span.

The incident happened on August 20 at a dairy at Prospect Ranch, located in a rural area near Keenesburg, Colo., less than 40 miles northeast of Denver.

Those who died were identified as five men and one teen:

  • Ricardo Gomez Galvan, 40
  • Noe Montañez Casañas, 32
  • Jorge Sanchez Pena, 36
  • Alejandro Espinoza Cruz, 50
  • Carlos Espinoza Prado, 29
  • Oscar Espinoza Leos, 17

Cruz was the father of Prado and Leos.  They were also related by marriage to Pena.

The report does not provide any details on the immigration status of the deceased. NBC News stated that Casañas, a veterinarian, was employed under a U.S. visa.
