From Fox News: Illinois will accept submissions for a new state flag design after Labor Day as commissioners decide whether to change the flag.
The measure creating a 20-member Illinois Flag Commission (IFC), was signed into law by Gov. JB Pritzker last year. The commission is currently deciding whether to change the flag.
“History is living, breathing, and ever-evolving,” said Democratic state Sen. Doris Turner, a co-sponsor of the legislation that started this effort.
In a statement, Turner said, “We need to ensure government is evolving with the times, so people are engaged and a part of what is going on across the State. To start the conversation, I led the initiative to create the Illinois Flag Commission….[It] is tasked with deciding whether the current State flag should be replaced with a redesigned State flag. We need a flag that truly represents Illinois – a state with a strong workforce, an agriculture champion, and so much more.”
A press release announced:
The bill allows the Commission to evaluate if a new State flag would better represent the State’s diversity of urban, suburban, and rural communities and inspire renewed State pride among Illinoisans.
Illinois has joined other States in seeking a new State flag design. Minnesota unveiled its new flag in December 2023, using a similar method to the one adopted by Illinois. Michigan and Maine are also considering an official change in their State flags.

Suggestions?”

One person has already posted his design on social media:
Many of you have seen the slow evolution of my Illinois flag design over the past few years, and I’m back with something a bit different!
The basic premise is the same: the sun rises over Lake Michigan and the Illinois prairie. More detail below.

The orange plain represents the prairie and agriculture. The stars represent industry and commerce in our cities, towns, and villages.
The colors fit the prairie/water/sky theme but also feel distinctly Illinoisian to me, and would be quite different from other state flags.

I also changed the constellation from three 5-point stars and one 6-point star to three 7-point stars. While I personally thought the nod to the Chicago flag was fun, I think any overt reference to Chicago will be instant death for competition proposals.
