The United States recently announced the development of a new missile defense initiative called the “Golden Dome,” a $175 billion project aimed at countering missile threats from nations like China and Russia.

President Trump revealed the selection of a design for the system and appointed a U.S. Space Force general to oversee the program. The Golden Dome is intended to serve as a comprehensive shield against various missile threats, including ballistic and hypersonic missiles.

As a result of the announcement, China has expressed deep concerns over the U.S. Golden Dome missile defense shield project and has urged Washington to abandon its development. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that the project carries “strong offensive implications” and increases the risks of militarizing outer space and triggering an arms race. She emphasized that the U.S. pursuit of absolute security for itself violates the principle that the security of all countries should not be compromised and undermines global strategic balance and stability.

The Golden Dome represents a strategic shift in the U.S. approach to missile defense and national security priorities. It aims to create a robust missile shield for the U.S., drawing inspiration from Israel’s Iron Dome system, which has been effective in defending against short-range rocket attacks. The initiative seeks to accelerate research and development for a system capable of countering ballistic missiles, hypersonic weapons, and advanced cruise missile threats.

China’s opposition to the Golden Dome is rooted in concerns that such a system could disrupt the strategic balance and prompt other nations to enhance their offensive capabilities in response. Beijing fears that the deployment of advanced missile defense systems by the U.S. could lead to a new arms race, compelling countries to develop more sophisticated offensive weapons to overcome these defenses. This scenario could undermine efforts to maintain global stability and security.

In light of these developments, China has called on the United States to abandon the Golden Dome project entirely and instead focus on building mutual trust among major global powers to maintain stability. The confrontation over the missile defense system pinpoints escalating tensions between the two nations, particularly over space and defense technologies.
