Costco recalled nearly 80,000 pounds of Kirkland Signature butter because the label didn’t mention milk as an allergen, sparking amusement online, according to a New York Post report.
Although cream is listed as an ingredient, there’s no warning that the butter “contains milk.” The FDA initiated the recall in October, and social media users have been quick to poke fun, with many simply commenting, “It’s butter.”
“80,000 pounds of Costco butter was just recalled, because the label doesn’t say that it contains milk. It’s butter. News articles are telling people how they can return, or safely dispose of, the butter. It’s butter,” one person pointed out.
“Can y’all please safely dispose of it at my house? I have a lot of holiday baking to do,” joked another.
“Next they’ll recall beef that might contain cow,” said another user.
Another joked: “If you need to government to tell you that butter is a dairy product then…well, I can’t help you God I loathe the state.”

Butter, made from churned milk, contains little lactose but can still trigger serious reactions in those allergic to milk. The CDC highlights milk as a top cause of severe allergies in the U.S., yet social media users criticized the recall, calling it wasteful. The FDA hasn’t reported any illnesses or adverse reactions from the recalled butter.
