According to multiple reports from CNN to The New York Times, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is currently reviewing a proposal for a reality television show titled The American, which would feature illegal aliens competing in various challenges across the United States for a chance to win expedited U.S. citizenship.
The concept, pitched by Canadian-born producer Rob Worsoff—known for his work on shows like Duck Dynasty—includes tasks such as gold mining in California and assembling a Ford Model T in Detroit. Worsoff emphasized that the show aims to be educational and celebratory, claiming, “This isn’t ‘The Hunger Games’ for immigrants.”
Despite reports suggesting that DHS Secretary Kristi Noem is collaborating on the project, the department has firmly denied her involvement. DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin stated, “Secretary Noem has not ‘backed’ or even reviewed the pitch of any scripted or reality show.”
She further clarified that while the department receives numerous television show pitches annually, each undergoes a thorough vetting process, and this particular proposal is still in its early stages without any approval or denial.
The proposed show has sparked criticism from various quarters, with some viewing it as an exploitative approach to the serious matter of immigration. Social media platforms have seen a mix of reactions, with some users expressing concern over the ethical implications of such a show.
In response to the backlash, Worsoff defended the concept, asserting that the show is intended to be uplifting and informative. He highlighted that contestants would not face deportation upon elimination but would instead receive consolation prizes, such as airline miles and gift cards. The aim, according to Worsoff, is to showcase the diverse paths to American citizenship and celebrate the nation’s values through the eyes of those aspiring to become citizens.
As the DHS continues its evaluation of the proposal, no official decisions have been made regarding the show’s production or airing. The department’s review process will determine whether the concept aligns with its mission and values. Until then, The American remains a proposal under consideration.
Kristi Noem’s DHS is considering launching a reality TV shows where illegal immigrants compete in a number of challenges to fast track their citizenship application.
