READ IT HERE: Here’s the transcript of a closed-door court hearing for Charlie Kirk’s accused killer

1

From the Salt Lake Tribune: The Utah courts on Monday released a transcript of a previously closed-door hearing for Tyler James Robinson, the 22-year-old accused of killing conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.

The October hearing centered around what clothes Robinson could wear in court and whether he should be shackled during court appearances. His defense team had argued any media coverage of Robinson in a jail jumpsuit or with visible restraints could potentially prejudice a jury.

The hearing was held in private, after both prosecutors and defense attorneys asked 4th District Judge Tony Graf for the closure. Since then, a coalition of media entities — spearheaded by The Salt Lake Tribune — asked Graf for more transparency and to release a transcript of the hearing.

On Monday, Graf announced that the transcript would be released with limited redactions that concern courthouse security. He rejected requests from the defense to further redact other portions of the transcript over privacy concerns.

An audio recording of the hearing is also set to be released, but the judge said it may take about two weeks to edit out the redacted content so it can be released.

The transcript starts out with Robinson’s legal team asking the judge to leave one hand unshackled so Robinson can take notes during the court proceedings.
