A RARE MOVE: Trump meets with Syrian President in unusual manner for foreign visitor

6

In a stunning development, the White House visit by Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa – a former al-Qaeda leader – has already happened Monday, with no media coverage whatsoever.

Typically, when a foreign leader visits the White House, the president welcomes them at the front door, and media is invited into the Oval Office for remarks from both leaders.

However Al-Sharaa was not honored with the usual welcome. Instead, the former terror leader entered and left through a side door far away from the cameras.

From Reuters: U.S. President Donald Trump hosted Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa at the White House on Monday, a visit that capped a stunning year for the rebel-turned-ruler who toppled a longtime autocratic leader and has since sought to end Syria’s decades of international isolation.

Trump met with Sharaa in the first-ever visit by a Syrian president to Washington, six months after their first meeting in Saudi Arabia, where the U.S. leader announced plans to lift sanctions, and just days after the U.S. said the former al Qaeda commander was no longer a “Specially Designated Global Terrorist.”

Sharaa arrived at the White House without the fanfare often given to visiting foreign leaders. He entered through a side entrance unseen by reporters instead of through the West Wing’s main door where cameras are positioned.

Sharaa, 43, took power last year after his Islamist fighters launched a lightning offensive from their enclave in Syria’s northwest and overthrew longtime Syrian President Bashar al-Assad just days later on December 8.

The State Department announced on Friday that the United Nations Security Council has lifted the terrorist designation of both President Ahmed al-Sharaa and Interior Minister Anas Hasan Khattub, sending “a strong political signal that further recognizes Syria’s transition to a new chapter.”

Due to Al-Sharaa’s terroristic past, many conservatives, including DMLNewsApp founder and podcast host Dennis Michael Lynch, are furious that the former al-Qaeda leader is being welcome to the White House.

DML voiced his outrage in a video on X Monday morning.  Watch:

Supporters of Al-Sharaa have gathered outside the White House Monday morning, playing Syrian music and waving Syrian flags.

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani posted a video on Instagram Saturday showing al-Sharaa out playing basketball with U.S. military officials Adm. Brad Cooper and Brig. General Kevin Lambert. The video is being reposted on X by a number of angry Americans.

BACK STORY: Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa, 42, now the president of Syria, is also known by his former gorilla leader name, Abu Mohammad al-Julani.  The United States once had a $10 million bounty on al-Julani’s head, but the Biden administration removed that bounty in December 2024, after he toppled the regime of then-Syrian President Bashar al-Assad earlier that month.

Al-Julani, or Al-Sharaa, had been designated as a terrorist by the United States since 2013. He had previously fought against U.S. forces in Iraq and served time in the infamous Abu Ghraib prison.

In May, ABC News reported that the United States had “no choice but to engage with al-Sharaa” after he became president of Syria, explaining that “a stable Syria is vital to the entire Middle East region.”
