From Fox News: The Rhode Island assistant attorney general, whose arrest went viral earlier this week after she seemingly tried to use her position to evade arrest, telling officers they’d “regret” putting her behind bars, will be placed on unpaid leave.
Special Assistant Attorney General Devon Flanagan, who was arrested for trespassing, was placed on paid leave directly after the incident while the Rhode Island Attorney General’s office reviewed the matter. But, starting Monday, Flanagan will go on unpaid leave, the office told Fox News Digital.
It is unclear how long Flanagan will remain on unpaid leave until a final determination is made on her employment. The Attorney General’s office did not respond to additional questions about its ongoing review of the matter, or when it might make a final decision.
State payroll records, according to the Boston Globe, show that Flanagan was raking in approximately $113,000 a year in her position as a Special Assistant Attorney General.
The incident happened around 10 p.m. on Thursday, August 14.
In the viral video of the moment the very drunk Flanagan was arrest, she refuses to comply with the officers’ demands, and is heard screeching, “I’m an AG! I’m an AG!”
“Buddy, you’re going to regret this! You’re going to regret it. I’m an A-” Flanagan howls as she was marched to the back of a police car. The officers had a difficult time closing the car door, as she then laid in the back seat and stuck her feet out the door, preventing the door from being closed.
In response to her yelling about her very important position, one of the officers is heard retorting, “Good for you, I don’t give a s—.”
During the ordeal, Flanagan repeatedly ordered the officers to turn off their body cameras, claiming they must do so upon request by a citizen. The officers refused to turn off the body cams, as they are NOT required to do so when a suspect requests it.
In an interview following the now-viral request, Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha said the officers were right, and agreed Flanagan had no authority to tell them to turn off their bodycams.
Neronha said Flanagan has brought embarrassment to his entire staff, but said she previously had an “unblemished” record working under him, and will be issuing an apology to the police department.
“She’s humiliated herself,” Neronha said, adding, “Regardless of what happens vis a vis her employment with us, she’s going to have a long time coming back from this. It’s just really unfortunate.”
