Elon Musk issued a public apology to President Donald Trump for inflammatory social media posts made during a heated feud the previous week, admitting they “went too far.”
The conflict erupted over Musk’s criticism of Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill,” a tax and spending proposal Musk called a “disgusting abomination” for increasing the U.S. deficit. Musk, who spent over $250 million supporting Trump’s 2024 campaign, escalated the dispute by alleging Trump’s name appeared in unreleased Jeffrey Epstein files and suggesting his impeachment, posts he later deleted. The feud, which played out on X and Truth Social, raised concerns about potential retaliation against Musk’s companies, Tesla and SpaceX, as Trump threatened to cut federal contracts. Musk’s apology came after private talks with Trump on June 10, following discussions with Vice President JD Vance and White House chief of staff Susie Wiles urging de-escalation.
In his X post, Musk wrote, “I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump
last week. They went too far.”
Trump acknowledged the apology as “very nice” in a pre-recorded New York Post interview, suggesting reconciliation was possible but expressing no strong desire to mend ties. As of June 12, Trump has not directly responded to Musk’s apology on social media, though White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the president was “appreciative” of it. The relationship remains strained, with Musk still signaling support for Trump’s policies. It’s unclear if the two will fully reconcile, as Trump has indicated he’s focused on broader priorities.
