Mayor Karen Bass of Los Angeles has faced extensive criticism for her handling of the recent wildfires that are still ravaging the city.

She was absent during the initial outbreak of the fires, attending the inauguration of Ghana’s president as part of a U.S. presidential delegation while the city burned. Bass was accused of mismanagement, with critics questioning her decision to cut the Los Angeles Fire Department’s budget by over $17 million, potentially impacting the department’s readiness for such disasters.

Despite claims that she was in constant communication, her physical absence was noted when residents were dealing with the immediate threat, leading to public outcry. Reports of inadequate water supply from hydrants further fueled discontent, as some areas ran dry amidst the fires, hampering firefighting efforts. Critics also pointed to her apparent lack of urgency in returning to Los Angeles, despite weather forecasts indicating severe fire risk.

Upon her return, Bass faced a barrage of questions but remained largely unresponsive, giving the impression of a lack of accountability. Her leadership has been contrasted with past mayors, with some suggesting that her focus on international engagements over local emergencies was misplaced. Public figures and residents alike have demanded explanations and accountability, with some calling for her resignation.
