President-elect Donald Trump has spoken out over the fact that the U.S. flag will be flying at half-staff on his Inauguration Day, January 20, due to the death of former President Jimmy Carter.
US code specifies that flags should fly at half-staff for 30 days after the death of a former president. Therefore, the flags will still be flying at half-staff until January 28, as ordered in a proclamation by Joe Biden.
Trump has confirmed that he will be attending Carter’s funeral, which is to be held at the Washington National Cathedral on Thursday, January 9. But the flag will still be flying at half-staff another 19 days after the funeral.
According to U.S. flag code, it appears that is possible for exceptions to be made by the U.S. President:
Any rule or custom pertaining to the display of the flag of the United States of America, set forth herein, may be altered, modified, or repealed, or additional rules with respect thereto may be prescribed, by the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the United States, whenever he deems it to be appropriate or desirable; and any such alteration or additional rule shall be set forth in a proclamation.
Trump posted the following statement, indicating he hoped some compromise could be reached:
The Democrats are all “giddy” about our magnificent American Flag potentially being at “half mast” during my Inauguration. They think it’s so great, and are so happy about it because, in actuality, they don’t love our Country, they only think about themselves. Look at what they’ve done to our once GREAT America over the past four years – It’s a total mess!
In any event, because of the death of President Jimmy Carter, the Flag may, for the first time ever during an Inauguration of a future President, be at half mast.
Nobody wants to see this, and no American can be happy about it. Let’s see how it plays out. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!
PLEASE TAKE OUR POLL BELOW – WE WANT YOUR OPINION: Should Joe Biden issue a proclamation that would void the half-staff rule for Trump’s Inauguration Day?

A reporter asked Biden’s White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Friday if there is any chance Biden would consider reversing or reevaluating the order to have the flags flying at half-staff on Trump’s Inauguration Day.
“No,” she snipped.
