POLL: Should Senate Republicans abolish the filibuster?

9

At least some Senate Republicans appear to be listening to President Donald Trump’s urgent appeal to abolish the filibuster, which is a longstanding rule in the Senate that prevents many bills from passing unless 60 senators in the 100-member chamber support it. Republicans currently have a 52-seat majority, but they are prevented from passing much legislation unless 8 Democrats cross the aisle to support them.

Because of the filibuster, Republicans need support from at least 8 Democrats to end the government shutdown. So far, only 3 Democrats have done so, and the remaining Democrats refuse to support the Continuing Resolution to open the government.

Many Republicans don’t want to end the filibuster, as it allows them to block Democrats from passing their bills when the left has the majority. However, Trump has warned that if Republicans don’t do it now, Democrats WILL eliminate the filibuster themselves when they get control, and then there will be no stopping them from ramming their radical agenda into law.

Trump has also warned that when Democrats abolish the filibuster, they are going to pack the Supreme Court and give statehood to Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico.

From The Hill: Senate Republican support for eliminating the filibuster is picking up momentum after President Trump invited members of the Senate GOP conference to the White House for a breakfast meeting Wednesday to demand they reform the Senate’s rules in order to reopen the government.

Changing the Senate’s rules with a simple majority vote to eliminate the 60-vote threshold for advancing most legislation would be very controversial — so controversial that it’s called the “nuclear option” — but a growing number of Senate Republicans are calling for a review of the matter.

As of now, there aren’t 50 Republican senators who would vote to change the rules to reopen the government and speed the rest of Trump’s agenda through Congress, but Trump’s pressure campaign is having an effect.

So far, Senate Majority Leader John Thune said terminating the filibuster “is not happening.”  However, others are siding with Trump.

Sen. Jim Banks (R-Ind.) said, “We have a short period, window of time, to do the things that we promised our voters that we would do. The filibuster is standing in the way of balanced budgets and cutting spending, on top of other things like passing vote ID laws.”

Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) told reporters he agrees with Trump’s call to end the filibuster.

Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS) said he doesn’t want to terminate the filibuster but added, “desperate times call for desperate measures.”

Sen. Josh Hawley said, “Every day that the Democrats hold the government hostage makes abolishing the filibuster a lot more attractive!”

Geiger Capital pointed by an old tweet by AOC confirming Democrats will do exactly what President Trump has warned of.

Conservative X user Mila Joy warned, “Everything Trump has done was done through Executive Orders. Everything will revert back when a Democrat gets into office. For permanent change, everything must be made a LAW through Congress. Terminate the filibuster.”
