POLL: Should Sec. Hegseth resign following second Signal scandal?

12

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is embroiled in a second Signal scandal after reportedly sharing sensitive details of a March 15 U.S. military strike against Yemen’s Houthi rebels in a private Signal group chat named “Defense | Team Huddle.”

The chat, created by Hegseth, included his wife, brother, personal lawyer, and several Pentagon aides, raising concerns about national security protocols. This follows a prior incident where Hegseth shared similar information in another Signal chat that mistakenly included The Atlantic’s editor-in-chief.

President Donald Trump has publicly stood behind Hegseth, dismissing the reports as “fake news” and praising his performance, stating, “Pete’s doing a great job. Ask the Houthis how he’s doing,” at the White House Easter Egg Roll. However, media outlets, including The New York Times and Politico, report growing pressure for Hegseth to resign or be fired, with some sources claiming the White House is quietly seeking replacements. Democratic lawmakers, like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, have called for Hegseth’s immediate dismissal, claiming risks to troops’ lives.

At the Easter Egg Roll, Hegseth responded defiantly, calling the reports “hit pieces” driven by “disgruntled former employees” and insisting the media was peddling lies to undermine his leadership. He attributed the leaks to recently fired Pentagon officials, claiming they retaliated against his efforts to reform the Defense Department. The Pentagon’s inspector general is now investigating Hegseth’s use of Signal, intensifying scrutiny on his tenure.
